Top 10 Reasons why Linux Rocks 17

For most computer users, Windows and Mac are the only operating system (OS) they have ever used. In fact, most people don’t even know about other Operating systems at all . And thats very not good !

Even if you have spent your childhood or even your whole life dedicated to your default OS’s then you haven’t had fun with it . And thats because we always like to have a choice . Whether it is software [ free or commercial ] or the hardware . But when it comes to your operating system ,people generally stick to their OS’s but then you have hell lot many choices and that too better and Free too !

There are many operating systems out there  .Yep , i am talking about Linux – a free [ rocking ] open-source operating system. There is a possibility that you have heard it from someone working in Information Technology department or here ! and i am damn sure you would definitely carry a stream of misconceptions about it. I’ll try to tell you why LINUX is the best OS and why everyone should try Linux
Here are the reasons why Linux rocks 8)

Why linux rules

Mac vs Linux vs Windows

1] Compatibility with Old systems

Linux Works well even on older systems without compromising on features, and is not as memory hungry as Windows Vista or Windows 7 beta. Time to drag out your old computers stashed in your basement. And you thought that they were just collecting dust. Install Linux on these older machines and you will have an up and running antique operating in no time [Pentium 3 case + 128 mb Ram case considered ]

2] Graphics

It has all 3D and other super  pleasing effects. Some of these effects surpass those of Windows 7 ( like desktop cube visually )

3] Stability

It is very stable and crashes very very rarely . Also, it is the fastest ! You can check running any app or surfing Internet from Linux on your currently installed OS

4] Security

Linux is built with strong foundation of Debian linux and it has loads of safety features, many of which you won’t find in other systems. As you guessed, you won’t require to install any anti-virus softwares as no viruses can attack Linux ! Thats why it is used fearlessly 8)

5] User Friendly

It is the most user friendly Operating system . Everything is just like apple and windows with lil bit change in algorithms  and controls . Linux can be installed inside the windows /Apple partition .

6] Driver availability

Drivers for most of the  devices are available for linux, and when you connect to the Internet, it detects and downloads them automatically. Even i didn’t need to install drivers for my hp printer in linux whereas on my windows i installed drivers and software without which it wouldn’t print 😥

7] Automatic updates

Linux  provides automatic updates through software sources for all packages installed through built-in package managers. Also, you can upgrade to a new OS ‘s as soon as it is available . Update for each of the software is available at-least 2 times a week .

8] Apps

Linux provides users with heaps of softwares through software sources. There are more than lakhs of softwares . Games , multimedia , educational etc . To install any of them, you just select from Synaptic Package Manager and down them all .

9] Run windows

In case you want to use Windows or windows  programs [ .exe files ] in Linux , then you can do it easily with the help of Wine. Wine is a software with which we can run any windows software on Linux . Though not very stable, you can install and run many softwares on it. I have also seen guys installing Microsoft Office , Media Player , Gtalk  in linux this way.

10] Free !

Almost all the things in this OS are free, including the OS itself.  Why spend hundreds of dollars when you can spend NOTHING and receive an excellent operating system. This is ideal for those of us who want to avoid any and everything Microsoft, and ideal for those who want to build a PC from scratch on the cheap. You can download straight away from Torrents or order a free CD home with no shipping charges 😈

I am currently using ubuntu and kubuntu distro of linux , which one have you used so far or heard atleast 😛 ?

Having used Windows, Linux and OSX I find three different system build methods.
Linux sometimes can be a pain to install and get 100% functional. But after you do it’s a friggin tank and needs no further messing with.
Windows is easy to install, but will make you work harder to keep it running like it should for as long as you stay on that platform.
Mac for me at least works as soon as you unbox it. Kinda like if someone else setup a Linux machine for you. Linux / OSX have turned computers into toasters. Not once have I questioned toast. Or inspected it to make sure it was brown on both sides, etc… Some people like to tinker that is fine, and I guess the windows crowd will get those folks. I find Linux and OSX to at times be painfully boring, only because I had been a windows guy for so long that I always feel like I should be doing something to maintain the experience. Culture shock. Be well people.

Hi Ajinkya, saw your comment over on TechieMania and was pleased to see your blog post about Linux! These are definitely 10 great reasons why Linux rocks! Your #7 (Drivers) is real important. I’m happy to see more manufacturers making drivers available for Linux. A pleasant surprise when I installed Mandriva Linux not long ago is that the wireless worked right away, without any issues at all!

Something else that is really cool about Linux is the ability to try different flavors before committing to any by using a Live CD. 🙂

Thanks for this write-up. When you get a chance, I’d love for you to weigh in on one of my Try Linux polls hosted on Squidoo.

Linux really isn’t an OS, it’s a kernel, you seem to be referring to Ubuntu, anyway, I totally agree! Linux is awesome.
